In 2020, around 227,340 women across World Wide developed cervical cancer.
A distinction has to be made between an in situ carcinoma, a locally limited tumor that has not yet damaged the surrounding tissue, and a fully developed cancer that can spread metastases (invasive carcinoma).
In seven out of ten women, an invasive tumor begins on the squamous cell tissue of the cervical mucosa, whereas adenocarcinomas have a higher point of origin at the junction from the body of the uterus to the cervix.
